When a large amount of magma erupts from a volcano in a short period, the underground chamber may be unable to support the structure above, resulting in a collapse. This leaves a massive depression at the surface, a cauldron-like hollow called a caldera. Although there are thousands of volcanic eruptions every century, only a handful create a new caldera.
